THE CONSCIOUS VOICE MAGAZINE

- A history-making publication

Content was key. Being FIRST unlocked the door.  In 2010, we were chosen to debut Mark Bradford’s FIRST museum survey (above) at The Ohio State University’s Wexner Center for the Arts! I was the only journalist of color at the media preview. In my article, I declared that Mark Bradford was not just an artist, but the change agent we need!

Seven years after the magazine was out of print, Mark Bradford, was chosen to represent the U.S. in 2017 at the 57th Venice Biennale. That same year, he made his Washington D.C. debut, creating his largest indoor work, and became the first artist to be given the full expanse of the Hirshhorn Museum. A year later, a $12 million acquisition made him the highest-paid living Black artist!

ICONIC ADS + ARTIST EXCLUSIVES

So I designed The Conscious Voice to be everything that Black media was not. It was oversized and showy, opening to a massive 22 x 17 inches, and featured cutting-edge graphic design and articles on race, culture and design.

I pushed my way into all-white museum spaces to be a voice of exposure for artists of color, whose works were rarely featured in any media.

By focusing on overlooked artists of color, in time, The Conscious Voice Magazine would become a history-making publication!
